Salina, Panarea & Stromboli
Rising out of the azure seas off Sicily’s northeastern coast, the UNESCO protected Aeolian Islands are a magical string of Mediterranean island jewels. These stunning volcanic islands are a wonder for their natural beauty and uniquely less-traveled place and pace. The tour starts at Taormina…called the true gem of Sicily…with its ancient and infinite loveliness situated under the shadow of Mt. Etna. From there we travel by hydrofoil to Salina to begin our Aeolian immersion.
Salina is an unspoiled Mediterranean island paradise featuring picturesque villages, imposing volcanic cones and a traditional lifestyle. We will experience Salina from many perspectives, on beautiful walks, on a winding, panoramic coach ride and a private boat tour around the island. We’ll spend time in the main town of Santa Marina Salina, the charming hamlet of Malfa, the delicious Lingua, boasting the local specialty, of granita & brioche, at the renowned da Alfredo and a visit to the incomparable village of Pollara. Considered to have perhaps the prettiest Aeolian Island vistas, Pollara is where many scenes of the acclaimed film Il Postino (The Postman) were filmed. Our time in Salina will also feature a winery tour (and private dinner) where they create magnificent sweet Malvasian wine, made with the local grapes and created nowhere else on earth.
From Salina we will make excursions to fashionable Panarea, the smallest of the Aeolian Islands, and sparsely populated Stromboli, with its awe-inspiring active volcano, lava eruptions and black-sand beaches. There are no roads, cars or pollution on Panarea, which has become an offbeat, ultra-chic destination for the most discerning travelers. On Stromboli we’ll visit ancient Greco-Roman ruins and the quaint village of San Vincenzo with its famous church. The real highlight of Stromboli will happen at night though; not only will we be dining at sea, but we’ll also witness the “sciara del fuoco”, the island’s fiery lava eruptions, an Aeolian experience like no other.
